Continued... Golden Apple Award

The Golden Apple Award is a very special recognition given to one special teacher in the state of Iowa each month during the school year. Thousands of letters are received each year in which students nominate a favorite teacher.  Nominating Mrs. Wessling was senior Randi Imerman.

WHO channel 13 TV was there to cover the event which will be televised hopefully tonight during the newscasts.  Guthrie Center High School graduate Abby Snyder presented the award on behalf of Allied Insurance and WHO TV.

Congratulations to Mrs. Wessling for receiving this much coveted award.

Continued... Bett & Bev’s Barbecue

On Monday, May 11, he visited his third of four stops in Central Iowa, Bett & Bev’s Barbecue at 901 North Elm Street in Jefferson.  The story was aired on the 10:00 p.m. news on the 11th and each broadcast on the 12th.  If you missed it, you can still watch the featured story on KCCI’s website at http://www.kcci.com/video/19437066/index.html.

Karlin is doing this series as one of the ways that KCCI is helping with the local economies in Iowa.  Karlin said, “In this economy many people are looking for things to do closer to home.” KCCI knows there is a lot to do and see around Iowa and by showcasing restaurants with great atmosphere, food and service they hope to show Iowans a few of their choices.

Bett & Bev’s BBQ was chosen as one of the four stops because many people e-mailed KCCI with comments of owner, Adam Glawe’s excellent slow-cooked barbecue and great Iowa décor. Karlin said the  two main reasons above all of the e-mails for choosing Bett & Bev’s were the endorsement from Meteorologist John McLaughlin’s brother Mike, who owns New Way (Scranton Manufacturing) in Scranton and often eats there, as well as, Adams mother-in-law who wrote a glowing letter and sent many photos depicting the Greene County and Iowa history décor of the restaurant.

Amy Milligan, Jefferson Area Chamber of Commerce Director visited with Karlin about the value that Adam brings to Jefferson with his outstanding barbecue.  Milligan told Karlin that Glawe grew up in Greene County and that many people are thrilled he chose to stay here to raise his family and start this business.  Karlin exclaimed after taking a big bite of his frip pie, “You are very lucky he chose to be here because with this food, he could be successful anywhere!”

Milligan spoke with Glawe, in a follow up interview, on Tuesday, May 12.  Glawe said that because of the news story he was even more busy than usual.  Glawe stated, “There was standing room only and the line to get in was outside the door.” People from all around Central Iowa came to try his now famous barbecue.  Glawe got the chance to talk with a few people from Des Moines, Winterset, DeSoto, Panora, Lake City and Ankeny and said those were just the people he talked with, but there were more new faces that he didn’t get the chance to meet.

You can eat at Bett and Bev’s for lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and anytime from 11:00 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.  It is closed on the Saturday and Sunday.
